腸道健康在情緒與腦力起着關鍵作用。腸道細菌產生神經遞質(允許信息在神經細胞之間傳遞的化學物質),例如血清素、多巴胺、伽瑪氨基丁酸(GABA)等,這些都會影響情緒、動力和注意力。
血清素(Serotonin)是快樂、幸福感的指標,雖然看似與大腦🧠最有關,但其實約 90% 的血清素是在腸道產生的,而非大腦。
多巴胺(Dopamine)則有助於意志集中力和決心,大約有一半的多巴胺是在腸道釋放。
伽瑪氨基丁酸(GABA)可令精神放鬆,穩定情緒,提高睡眠質素或治療失眠。GABA不足也可能會影響工作記憶,包括短暫記憶、推理以及指導決策和行為。
腸-腦軸 (GBA)是公認的腸道和大腦之間的雙向溝通途徑,腸腦的細胞通過迷走神經(Vagus Nerve)與大腦直接交流。換言之,腸道菌可影響大腦,並改變行為和認知功能的化學信號。腸道菌會影響這種交流的效果,並在血清素和多巴胺等重要神經遞質的產生中發揮重要作用。其中一項研究表明益生菌(腸道好菌)可推薦來改善情緒低落。
